Grading Faults
1.Grade 1 faults are ‘minor´- not included in final result.
2.Grade 2 faults are more serious and are Included in final result.
3.Grade 3 faults are dangerous or potentially dangerous resulting in failure. Four grade 2 faults on the same line, eg. , if you take up and incorrect position on four left turns, results in a fail.Six or more grade 2 faults under the Same heading eg. Position or Observation is a fail. Nine or more grade 2 faults on the sheet overall is a fail.
Rules of the Road
Grade 2 fault... Three or more questions not answered or incorrectly answered.
Technical checks Grade 2 fault: Inability to describe three technical checks.
Secondary Controls
Grade 2 faults:
•Inability to demonstrate three secondary controls
•Serious misuse of secondary controls during the practical test
Grade 3 fault: not applicable
Primary Controls
Grade 2 faults:
•Not using the brake when the road ahead requires it.
•Sharp use of the brake when not required.
•Late use of the brake for dangers ahead.
Gears
Grade 2 fault:
•Selecting incorrect gear.
•Coasting in neutral.
•Driving in wrong gear for long period of time.
Mirrors
Grade 2 fault:
• Not using mirrors as and when required
Grade 3 fault:

Not applicable when on the straight, or on 'B' car tests
Blind Spot
Grade 2 and 3 faults: Not checking the blind spot moving off
Moving off.
Grade 2 and 3 faults: not checking the blind spot moving off.
Signals
Grade 2 faults
•Not giving correct signal in good time.
•Not cancelling a signal in good time.
•Beckoning to other road users.
•Misleading signal.
Grade 3 faults
•Beckoning dangerously to other road users.
•Having a left signal on when turning right or right turning left.
•Having a left signal on when approaching a roundabout and intending to take the second or subsequent exit.
•Signalling and failing to make the turn. Note: A ‘Misleading signal fault only applies where other road users are involved.
Position
Grade 2 fault: Incorrect Position on the straight, on bends, in traffic lanes, at cross – junctions, at roundabouts, turning right, turning left, stopping, following traffic and more serious weaving.
Grade 3 fault:
Dangerous or potentially dangerous: incorrect position on the straight, on bends, in traffic lanes, at cross – junctions, at roundabouts turning right, turning left, stopping, following, traffic.
​Weaving dangerously.
​Observation
Grade 2 fault: Not taking proper observation.
Grade 3 fault: Dangerous/ Potentially dangerous lack of observation.
Hazards
Grade 2 fault: Not reacting properly to hazards.
Grade 3 fault: failure to react to hazards.
Speed
Grade 2 faults
•Excessive speed for the road conditions.
•Exceeding the speed limit.
Grade 3 faults
•Dangerously excessive speed.
•Wilful disregard of speed limit.
Traffic controls
Grade 2 fault: Serious infringement.
Grade 3 fault: Complete disregard, or where obstruction is caused in a bus, tram or cycle lane.
Safe clearance and overtaking
Grade 2 faults
•Overtaking close to a hill, bend, narrow road or junction.
•Allowing excessive clearance.
•Moving in too soon.
•Allowing insufficient clearance to a pedestrian, cyclist, stationary vehicle, other traffic.
Grade 3 faults
•Dangerously cutting in
•Overtaking dangerously close to a hill, bend or on a narrow road.
•Driving dangerously close to a pedestrian, cyclist, stationary vehicle, other traffic.
Right of way
Grade 2 fault: not yielding right of way as required causing inconvenience.
Grade 3 faults:
•Not yielding right of way causing danger
•Overtaking in the face of ongoing traffic.
Progress
Grade 2 faults
•Inadequate progress, including at traffic lights.
•Causing obstruction.
Grade 3 fault:
•Unnecessary delay or causing severe obstruction at traffic lights.
Set piece manoeuvres
Turnabout.
Grade 2 fault: Serious lack of competency (control, position, progress), observation, right of way.
Grade 3 fault: Dangerous lack of competency (control, position), observation, right of way.
Hand signals
Grade 2 fault: three or more incorrect hand signals.
Reverse around the corner
Grade 2 fault: Serious lack of competency (control, position, progress), observation, right of way.
Grade 3 fault: Dangerous lack of competency (control, position), observation, right of way.
Parking
Grade 2 fault: serious lack of competency (control, position, progress); observation.
Grade 3 faults:
•Dangerously lack of competency (control, position); observation.
•Illegal position.
